Love Our Earth

I try rather unsuccessfully to avoid the news these days. The issues in the U.S. feel too huge and horrible to even delve into sometimes. But occasionally, I feel the need to know what’s being said to understand and stay informed.

Today, I made the mistake of viewing a portion of the daily press conference with the intent of hearing just what type of receipts they are saying “Elump” has found to prove not only mismanagement of government funds but fraud. Ms. Leavitt held up and read off several innocuous-sounding items. But this is what really caught my attention: “Oh, I love this one,” she said, “57,000 bucks for climate change in Sri Lanka! What is this doing to continue the interests of the American people?” she chortled.

Ummm, Karoline? Do you think the climate starts and stops at our borders? Have you heard the term “Earth”? In doing a little research, I found a debate she took part in about three years ago. Ms. Leavitt didn’t deny that we have “climate issues.” I guess she just thinks we don’t need to worry about the climate in Sri Lanka. One might say she isn’t seeing (or admitting) the big picture. Lie after lie after lie. All of them. This one is young. Maybe she’ll learn something and grow up by the time she’s booted out. But I’m not counting on it.

Yes, we have vast, critical things happening this very moment in the U.S., as many in Congress allow Elump to stomp all over us, and we pray for the judges to help save our democracy. But if we don’t work together to take care of our planet, none of the rest will matter. So, when we feel discouraged about so many issues out of our control, let’s find something, anything, we can do to help our Earth!

    1. Thanks, Pat:) I give my sister credit for that one! I know exactly what you mean about their relationship. But hanging on to all that power and $$$ probably makes it worthwhile to bite their tongues instead of lashing out. It can’t last forever, though!

Surely all this can’t last for 4 years..let’s hope they run out of steam way before…I listen and watch from afar with disbelief at the goings on…But I’m you on your final line, Becky… “But if we don’t work together to take care of our planet, none of the rest will matter. So, when we feel discouraged about so many issues out of our control, let’s find something, anything, we can do to help our Earth!”

    1. Maria, I appreciate you for saying that! Yes, things are grim here. And unfortunately, inept and questionable “leaders” in any country can affect the whole world. It’s a mess. But top priority must be the health of our planet! Without that, we have nothing.

  12. The first month of this presidency has been alarming for sure. But I agree, taking care of the earth is something all of us need to be concerned with, and it should be a priority. It would be nice if we could all agree on that, at least.

  13. I love it! Elump! :)))) Lets take care of climate change a block at a time. My daughter says that the green house gases are making people dumber than ever. Now we have proof. What will it take to get them gone? I don’t like to listen to the news either. Have to take it in sound bites to stay sane with all the insanity around us.

  14. Hi Becky, You are never forgotten, even if I’m late. 🙂

    I understand trying to find that balance between needing to know what’s going on and being so disgusted that you really don’t want to know at all. We are unfortunately entering a period when our beautiful planet is of less and less concern to those in power. Hopefully, our continued caring will somehow make a difference.

  15. The planet is the best example of how borders are meaningless. But there are other issues that defy governments to solve when they only look at national interests: food and water, healthcare, communications. All of these things can be tackled much more efficiently at regional or global level, yet we are currently far from being able to work together, even in the same continent. It’s depressing…

    I just read a wonderful book called ‘Orbital’ by Samantha Harvey that really puts our lives on this earth into perspective. It’s quite short, and not my usual thing as it involves astronauts. But I highly recommend it if you’d like some distance from the current political mess.

  17. The shortsightedness of this administration is something to behold (if that’s not some kind of mixed metaphor and contradiction.) It’s matched only by the cruelty and incompetence.

    I keep hoping that the Democrats come back to their senses, figure out why they lost so many of their supporters, and can offer a truly credible opposition so they can win back the House in 2026. Unfortunately – not too many signs yet.
